The conference brought together experts on food production, wildlife, the environment, policymaking,\u00a0and health to examine the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2017-10\/WWF_AppetiteForDestruction_Summary_Report_SignOff.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">impact of industrial agriculture on the natural world<\/a>\u00a0and identify solutions.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BF-Tony-Juniper-Pete-Myers-RM-e1507654716542-768x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3929\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BF-Tony-Juniper-Pete-Myers-RM-e1507654716542-768x1024-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BF-Tony-Juniper-Pete-Myers-RM-e1507654716542-768x1024-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>PM held a stall at the conference \u2013 featuring our Anthropocene campaign ambassador,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s-PiVUVzvYI\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Big Foot<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 to bring the message that any discussion of food production must also look at demand for food arising from population growth.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Anthropocene in action<\/h2>\n\n<p>Attendees at the conference heard in depth about the human impact on the environment, much of the content reinforcing the messages of PM\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/campaigns\/anthropocene\">Welcome to the Anthropocene<\/a>\u00a0campaign. Issues such as the decimation of bees, climate change, and the Sixth Mass Extinction were discussed and audiences were left in no doubt about the role of intensive livestock production \u2013 especially the production of animal feed \u2013 in driving these problems.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are 23 billion domesticated birds alive at any one time on the planet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2017-10\/WWF_AppetiteForDestruction_Summary_Report_SignOff.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WWF<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Up to 40% of all crops grown globally are for animal feed (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciwf.org.uk\/media\/7431691\/towards-a-flourishing-food-systemweb-spreads_93944.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CIWF<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>The livestock industry contributes 14% of greenhouse gas emissions (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/news\/story\/en\/item\/197623\/icode\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FAO<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Vulnerable natural habitats such as the Amazon Cerrado and Yangtze River basin are already used to grow feed for livestock (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2017-10\/WWF_AppetiteForDestruction_Summary_Report_SignOff.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WWF<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>A consistent message reinforced throughout the event was the need to move towards more plant-based diets, a measure that Population Matters has advocated as a way for individuals to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/smaller-families\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reduce their impact<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Human populations drive food demand and extinction<\/h2>\n\n<p>A number of presentations and speakers touched on the impact of human population growth- both as a direct threat to the environment and a driver of demand for food. Some addressed the issue directly \u2013 one said \u201cwe\u2019re overpopulated and we all know it\u201d \u2013 and a speaker from WWF recognised the importance of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/solutions\">family planning and women\u2019s education and empowerment\u00a0<\/a>as tools to help prevent extinction through reducing population pressure.<\/p>\n\n<p>Overall, however, the issue was very under-represented.
