With articles in&nbsp;The Times, the&nbsp;Washington Post, the&nbsp;New York Times,&nbsp;The Guardian,&nbsp;the BBC, and many other outlets, could it be that this long-neglected issue is finally getting the attention it deserves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Guardian-small-families-graphic-300x180-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3916\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Population and the impact of family size on our environment has been a neglected area of debate in mainstream media for decades now. Indeed, it has been seen by many as a taboo, or an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/the-population-bomb-is-a-dud-so-dont-panic-llhht52nk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opportunity to condemn<\/a>\u00a0those who campaign on the issue, without even investigating what we\u00a0actually believe and seek. Over the last year, welcome signs of greater openness to mature discussion have been visible, and over the last month, an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/media-coverage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">avalanche of media<\/a>\u00a0has focussed on the value of being childfree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leilani M\u00fcnter and being childfree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/LeilaniPrairieGold_ByAlexKrohn_Small-768x512-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3919\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/LeilaniPrairieGold_ByAlexKrohn_Small-768x512-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/LeilaniPrairieGold_ByAlexKrohn_Small-768x512-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\nCredit: Alex Krohn<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0announcement of our latest patron, racing driver and eco-activist Leilani M\u00fcnter, in May was the trigger for many of the articles we have seen recently, beginning with an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/leilani-m-nter-champion-of-the-child-free-urges-women-to-save-planet-cqbpr9dz2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0interview<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/girl-power-g6f8p7zk5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leader<\/a>\u00a0(editorial) in\u00a0<em>The Times<\/em>, backing in principle the goals and means of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/solutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solving our population crisis<\/a>\u00a0through policies such as better family planning provision and women\u2019s empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leilani\u2019s explanation of why she has personally decided to be childfree then caught the imagination of numerous media outlets, with\u00a0interviews with her, with Population Matters and with childfree individuals and couples appearing in multiple major outlets. Among many of those interviewed were friends of PM who we had linked up with journalists, including our board member Emma and one of the people featured in our recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/smaller-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Smaller Families<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>video, Anna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What distinguished much of this coverage from some that has gone before was that it was&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-5819361\/Women-refuse-babies-save-planet.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in-depth and respectful<\/a>, giving an opportunity to interviewees to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/jun\/20\/give-up-having-children-couples-save-planet-climate-crisis?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Tweet\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explain their reasons in detail<\/a>. Much of it also gave prominence to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/smaller-families\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">case for smaller families<\/a>&nbsp;and going childfree as a response to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/the-facts\/climate-change\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">environmental challenges<\/a>&nbsp;we face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The bigger picture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"764\" height=\"454\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Alistair-TRT-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Alistair-TRT-3.png 764w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Alistair-TRT-3-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent media coverage has not simply focussed on individual choices, however. Following its publication of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/jul\/12\/nature-versus-nurture-of-a-growing-human-population\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a letter<\/a>&nbsp;on the subject from our director Robin and patron Jonathon Porrit last year,&nbsp;<em>The Guardian&nbsp;<\/em>produced an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2018\/apr\/23\/population-how-many-people-can-the-earth-sustain-lucy-lamble\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in-depth piece<\/a>&nbsp;(linking to us) on the population challenge and recently published&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/jun\/07\/respecting-womens-rights-and-the-planet-key-to-family-planning\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another letter<\/a>&nbsp;from Robin two weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;also featured a prominent report on the positive benefits of having a smaller family on climate change last year, entitled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/jul\/12\/want-to-fight-climate-change-have-fewer-children\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cWant to fight climate change? Have fewer children<\/a>\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robin and our head of campaigns, Alistair, have been interviewed on many broadcast channels recently, including Sky News and TRT World.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Millenials-and-kids_0.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Millenials-and-kids_0.png 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Millenials-and-kids_0-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to coverage in traditional media, social media has also been galvanised by the issues. Population Matters\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PopnMatters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter page<\/a>\u00a0has seen 60% growth in less than two years, while among many successful posts on our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PopulationMatters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook page<\/a>, one sharing this graphic, by\u00a0Cultura Colectiva, has been viewed over 4 million times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breaking the media taboo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/talking-about-overpopulation-is-still-taboo-that-has-to-change\/2018\/06\/18\/ca7c1838-6e6f-11e8-afd5-778aca903bbe_story.html?utm_term=.66e7944fc348\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most significant articles<\/a>&nbsp;published recently is by Peter Singer, one of the world\u2019s most influential philosophers, and co-authors from the US and Uganda. Its headline in the&nbsp;<em>Washington Post<\/em>&nbsp;is \u201cTalking about overpopulation is still taboo.
