The amendment, which\u00a0was first enacted in 1985 and\u00a0used by several Republican presidents,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.genderhealth.org\/the_issues\/us_foreign_policy\/kemp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prohibits foreign aid<\/a>\u00a0from going to an organisation that is involved in coercive abortion or involuntary sterilisation.<\/p>\n\n<p>The UNFPA says\u00a0these claims are erroneous\u00a0and that while the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/transparency-portal\/unfpa-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNFPA has a program in China<\/a>, \u201call of its work promotes the rights of individuals and couples to make their own decisions, free of coercion or discrimination\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cUNFPA does not fund or perform abortions or forced sterilisations anywhere in the world. Instead, the agency offers voluntary family planning to prevent unintended pregnancies which, in turn, empowers girls and women to pursue an education, earn an income, and live more prosperous lives\u201d\u00a0said U.N. Foundation President and CEO Kathy Calvin.<\/p>\n\n<p>Some of the UNFPA programmes run in the world\u2019s \u201cmost fragile\u201d countries, including Iraq, South Sudan, Syria, Yemen and Somalia.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2016, with support from the United States, its fourth largest donor,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unfpa.org\/press\/statement-unfpa-us-decision-withhold-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNFPA says<\/a>\u00a0that was able to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Save the lives of 2,340 women from dying during pregnancy and childbirth;<\/li>\n<li>Prevent 947,000 unintended pregnancies;<\/li>\n<li>Ensure 1,251 fistula surgeries;<\/li>\n<li>Prevent 295,000 unsafe abortions;<\/li>\n<li>Help 3 million couples prevent unwanted pregnancy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>\u201cThe U.S. is one of the largest contributors to the UNFPA, and eliminating U.S. funds threatens the health and rights of millions of girls and women around the world, particularly those in crisis situations,\u201d said U.N.
