Campaigns and Media Officer Madeleine Hewitt responds and explains why progressives must address population growth as an environmental issue and avoid the pronatalism trap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Donald Trump\u2019s vice-presidential candidate JD Vance has recently dominated news headlines with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c147yn4xxx4o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018childless cat ladies\u2019<\/a> remarks. Mr Vance&#8217;s comments were made in the context of criticising people who do not have children. He has been vocal in advocating for pronatalist policies that encourage people to have more children. This is part of the ongoing Donald Trump presidential campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JD Vance has also expressed his support for a <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/17\/politics\/kfile-jd-vance-abortion-comments\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nationwide abortion ban.<\/a> You can find out more about him and his stance on women\u2019s reproductive rights in the US <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/07\/jd-vance-and-the-threat-to-reproductive-rights-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to JD Vance\u2019s comments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/05\/opinion\/birthrate-jd-vance-progressives.html?smid=em-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times published an opinion that called for progressive politicians, those considered left-leaning, to also adopt pronatalist policies,<\/a> dismissing the environmental impacts of continued population growth. We sent the following letter to The New York Times in response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Response<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>JD Vance\u2019s pronatalist rhetoric is a red flag to progressives that women\u2019s reproductive rights are being attacked in favour of outdated \u2018continuous growth\u2019 models destroying a world with finite natural resources. Humanity is in ecological debt, demanding the equivalent resources of 1.7 earths (Global Footprint Network). To dismiss the environmental impacts of continued population growth as \u2018unconvincing\u2019 literally misses the wood for the trees, when increasing deforestation, overfishing, and new oil and gas licenses, are all driven by rising demand from a growing, not declining, global population, on track to hit 10.3 billion in the next 60 years.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our unsustainable numbers and demand are driving the triple planetary crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss, and forever chemical pollution. It&#8217;s not overconsumption or population growth, progressives must address both. The IPCC is absolutely clear, in its 2022 report citing population growth as one of the two strongest drivers (alongside per capita GDP) of carbon emissions. Progressive policies should be focused on paving the way for an older workforce, within a fairer, circular economic system, that better favours people and the planet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Look At the Numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On 1 August, we passed <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/07\/planets-annual-budget-of-resources-used-up-in-just-7-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earth Overshoot Day<\/a>. This means we have depleted the natural resources and services in a given year that the Earth can sustainably regenerate. In short, we\u2019ve used up the planet\u2019s annual resource budget in just 7 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Amount-of-Earths-renewable-resources-used-2017-landscape-logo.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Amount-of-Earths-renewable-resources-used-2017-landscape-logo.png 1800w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Amount-of-Earths-renewable-resources-used-2017-landscape-logo-300x213.png 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Amount-of-Earths-renewable-resources-used-2017-landscape-logo-1024x728.png 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Amount-of-Earths-renewable-resources-used-2017-landscape-logo-768x546.png 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Amount-of-Earths-renewable-resources-used-2017-landscape-logo-1536x1092.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The United Nation\u2019s <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/03\/global-resources-dwindling-as-demand-rises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Resources Outlook 2024<\/a><\/em><\/strong> message was clear. Unsustainable demand is the main driver of the triple planetary crisis:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>climate change<\/strong><\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/biodiversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>biodiversity loss,<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/the-facts-resources-consumption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>pollution and waste.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continued population growth is at the core of the world\u2019s resources crisis. It\u2019s disappointing that editorial pieces often so casually dismiss the detrimental environmental impacts of population growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/02\/thoughts-on-declining-fertility-and-scientists-warning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The scientific evidence is clear that continued population growth is making all our environmental crises harder to solve<\/a>. Yet the only numbers many tend to focus on are lowering birth rates, <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/07\/why-the-world-needs-fewer-babies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when fewer babies is a positive sign<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time to start looking at the whole picture and literally see the wood for the trees. Focus should be on not just the number of babies born per year, but also the number of trees cut down worldwide, and <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/what-we-want\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recognise how the former drives the latter.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\"
