Florence Blondel investigates the US Senator&#8217;s previous comments on the issue of reproductive rights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JD Vance, the new Republican vice-presidential candidate, favours strict abortion restrictions and opposes exceptions for rape and incest, considering pregnancies resulting from such circumstances as <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumnews1.com\/oh\/columbus\/DearOhio\/2021\/09\/21\/dear-ohio--senate-candidate-j-d--vance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;inconvenient&#8221;<\/a> rather than grounds for abortion. Vance has defended laws like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/03\/us\/what-is-texas-abortion-law-as-equals-intl-cmd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas abortion ban<\/a>, which severely limits access to the procedure\u200b.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vance views the protection of unborn children as a moral imperative, arguing against abortion rights even when it contradicts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2024\/05\/13\/broad-public-support-for-legal-abortion-persists-2-years-after-dobbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">popular opinion<\/a> or legislative outcomes. Recently, he criticised Ohio voters for enshrining abortion protections in their state constitution. Writing on X (formerly Twitter) the day after Ohio voted to enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JDVance1\/status\/1722311695140298978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">he said<\/a>: \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cGiving up on the unborn is not an option. It&#8217;s politically dumb and morally repugnant.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite>JD Vance, X (Twitter) on 8 November 2023<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A radical stance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, Vance was picked as the vice-presidential candidate during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. While Donald Trump has been bold in challenging women&#8217;s rights, Vance is perceived by many as even more extreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The possibility of a second Trump presidency looms large. In his first term, Trump played a significant role in paving the way for the Supreme Court to overturn <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2022\/06\/a-terrible-human-cost-roe-v-wade-overturned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roe v. Wade<\/a>. Since the landmark decision was reversed on 24 June 2022, fourteen states have implemented <a href=\"https:\/\/states.guttmacher.org\/policies\/abortion-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">total abortion bans<\/a>, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/know-your-value\/health-mindset\/-was-torture-texas-mom-recounts-denied-abortion-doomed-pregnancy-rcna161450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">harrowing experiences<\/a> for many women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1904\" src=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gayatri-malhotra-trKfWbqc5Rg-unsplash_crop-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Protest for reproductive rights in the US\" class=\"wp-image-4565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gayatri-malhotra-trKfWbqc5Rg-unsplash_crop-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gayatri-malhotra-trKfWbqc5Rg-unsplash_crop-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gayatri-malhotra-trKfWbqc5Rg-unsplash_crop-1024x762.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gayatri-malhotra-trKfWbqc5Rg-unsplash_crop-768x571.jpg 768w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gayatri-malhotra-trKfWbqc5Rg-unsplash_crop-1536x1142.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/gayatri-malhotra-trKfWbqc5Rg-unsplash_crop-2048x1523.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After JD Vance was announced on the Republican ticket, Trump\u2019s niece, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/jd-vance-as-vp-is-beginning-of-the-end-of-womens-rights-mary-trump\/ar-BB1q90UK?ocid=BingNewsSerp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mary Trump<\/a> said this on her substack:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;American women will know misery if by some great tragedy Donald and Vance get into the White House because those two will make <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2021\/03\/the-handmaids-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale<\/em><\/a><em> our reality.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite>Mary Trump, <a href=\"https:\/\/marytrump.substack.com\/p\/the-most-anti-woman-ticket-in-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Substack<\/a>, 17 July 2024<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cUNDER HIS EYE\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We think the combination of Trump and Vance poses a significant threat to reproductive rights in the US, particularly for young girls and women. Both men have judges sympathetic to them and conservative allies already interfering in women\u2019s bodily autonomy at the state level. Vance also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KamalaHarris\/status\/1813778228701512146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">voted against<\/a> protections for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in June 2024 and, according to vice-president Kamala Harris, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KamalaHarris\/status\/1813778228701512146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contraception<\/a> could be next.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>THE NEED FOR VIGILANCE AND ADVOCACY<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe campaigners for women&#8217;s rights should be concerned about Vance&#8217;s views because they reflect a broader movement to limit reproductive rights, undermining access to safe and legal abortions. We have been there with Trump, remember the <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2019\/06\/trumps-global-gag-rule-is-killing-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Gag Rule<\/a>?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many motivations are driving the opposition to abortion rights in certain countries, including the desire to boost birth rates. In the United States, various anti-abortion groups and political figures have voiced concerns over declining populations and have criticised the <a href=\"https:\/\/populationmatters.org\/news\/2024\/07\/why-the-world-needs-fewer-babies-part-three\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argument<\/a> for a sustainable population.
